About Me

Hi! My name is Heather White. My book, Who Needs The Night? A book for all who share the wonder of the night, explores the impacts of light pollution. At the top of the pages, readers will find a sing-song style for a younger audience with facts at the bottom of the pages for older children that want to learn more. This book covers how light pollution affects plants and animals. Learn the four types of light pollution. Who Needs The Night? concludes by offering positive, simple changes you can make at home and in your community to make a difference and reduce your impact.

My Background

I was raised in Westchester, NY, just north of NYC. As a young child and avid explorer of nature, I would often be running out the back door yelling to my mom, ā€œI’m going on a brook walk.ā€ My parents were strong environmentalists with knowledge way ahead of their time.

I'm a retired teacher who found a way to slip nature into everyday conversations with my students. I've raised four boys and am now sharing my knowledge of the St. Lawrence River, and the wildlife who share this magnificent place, with my grandson, Gideon. He is eighth generation on Thousand Island Park, Wellesley Island, where I reside year-round with my husband, Jonathan and our sweet dog, Sunny.

Make an Impact

Here's how you can help

  • Flip the switch

Turn off outside lights when you're not using them.

  • Do Your Research

Read up on the topic, write a report and share at school or at a community meeting. You could be the reason others learn about light pollution and inspire them to start making changes.

  • Write Your Reps

Get the names and addresses of your local and regional government representatives. Tell them how important dark skies are to people, plants and animals and encourge them to take action.
